International Conference "Music and Genocide"

The International Conference "Music and Genocide" took place in Krakow on November 16 and 17, 2012. It was organized by the Chair in Comparative Studies of Civilizations of the JU Faculty of Philosophy, in cooperation with Sztruks Association and Manggha Museum of Japanese Art and Technology.

The conference was held in English, in the premises of Manggha Museum of Japanese Art and Technology. More than a dozen scholars from all over the world, representing different disciplines, gave speeches in which they presented different approaches to the role of music in the context of genocide. The speakers referred to the experience of different cultures, from their recent and past history, speaking about the role of art in reacting to political, social, and economic processes. The conference was accompanied by a presentation of a piece of music composed by Lawrence Kramer and the premiere of "Stille" music and dance performance directed by Wojciech Klimczyk, with music by Aleksandra Gryka.
